Reimagine the Waterfront
Reimagine the Waterfront covers urban waterfront design with a focus on the civic, ecological, and equity dimensions that determine whether a revitalized shoreline actually serves the full range of residents who live near it. The site draws on work by CIVITAS and related organizations that have engaged the design community in thinking seriously about shared public space at the water's edge.
Writing addresses the transformation of post-industrial waterfronts into public amenities, the role of design competitions in advancing urban thinking, and the relationship between resilience planning and waterfront quality. The East River Esplanade in Manhattan provides a recurring case study: a waterfront that exemplifies both the potential and the persistent failures of urban shoreline investment.
The site is written for planners, landscape architects, civic organizations, and engaged residents who believe that waterfronts belong to everyone and that the quality of their design matters for the life of a city.
